Guidelines for Gaining Continuing Education Credit (CEU's)
1) All ordained ministers are now required to earn 2 continuing education units (CEU's) each year as part of their pattern of life-long learning. (Manual424.6) Ten contact hours are required for one CEU. (A contact hour is defined as 50 minutes in session.) All CEU credits are reported to Kansas City by the District CEU Coordinator. A card issuing credit will be sent to the Coordinator to be forwarded to the
minister.
2) Those involved in degree programs (e.g., Masters or Doctoral studies) beyond the foundational educational requirements for ordination will be considered exempt from CEU requirements as long as 10 credit hours per year are completed. However, they must notify the Coordinator of these earned credits.
3) To help you earn CEU credits, our district will be sponsoring special seminars that will give you practical help in your continuing growth as a minister. The areas of growth which have been defined by our denomination and which will be the focus of our seminars are:
-
Content (Bible, theology)
- Competency (administration, organization, preaching, etc.)
- Character (personalgrowth issues)
- Context (social concerns, ethics, community situations).
4) You may obtain CEU credits through other means which include:
- Seminars held by organizations approved by the Office of Ministry, Church of the Nazarene. If you are planning to attend a seminar and hope to gain CEU credit, you should contact the District CEU Coordinator in advance to learn whether it is an approved seminar. It would also be helpful to forward to the Coordinator any literature you have concerning the event.
- Courses that relate to the four areas mentioned in item #3 above. Such courses must be ones that the minister has not previously taken. Approval of such a course for CEU credit will require a syllabus sent to the Coordinator. These courses could be through one of our denominational schools or another recognized institution.
- Classes that a minister teaches for the Metro Nazarene School of Ministry, the Small Church Institute, or other recognized programs. One CEU is granted for each 30 hours of preparation time for the first time the class is taught.
- Books read and reflection papers written. This option is for pastors who have been hindered from attending district CEU events by circumstances beyond their control. The District Ministerial Studies Board must grant approval.
- Nazarene Bible College’s online “Institute for Ministry Enrichment.” Courses are offered online. For more information go to www.nbcime.com or call 1-800-873-3873, ext. 5030.
